Interstate 3? NO! Interstate 22? YES!
Perhaps only those of you that live in the North Georgia Mountain
Region have concerns regarding the proposed I-3. Everyone else
should!
I-3 is the next proposed interstate expansion
project scheduled for Georgia. The US Congress appropriated
engineering funding this year. The project is easy to describe. I-3
will parallel the Savannah River between Savannah and Augusta. Then
it begins to depart the river and take a more northwestward course
through the mountains of North Georgia. Passing through the vicinity
of Young Harris, it finally crosses into North Carolina before
ending in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Not many folks are real happy
about this project. I am one of them. Why?
- The folks in the mountain region don’t want it.
- It does nothing to relieve thru traffic around Atlanta.
- It does not give interstate access to many regions of the
state that badly need it.
- It does not maximize utilization of “once every 10 year”
interstate expansion funds.
I have a different proposal. I designated it Interstate 22. See
the map below.
